FenestraPro Target Add-in for Revit – Determine the Target Percentage of Glazing

From the Autodesk Exchange Apps website...

FenestraPro Target is a free trial showcasing just some of the functionality provided by the FenestraPro Premium Add-In package.

The tool allows you to determine the target percentage glazing for your conceptual mass model based on the thermal performance of the building envelope.

Once complete, the target percentage is applied to the Conceptual Mass Model.

FenestraPro Premium for Autodesk® Revit® balances the heat loss, heat gain and daylighting requirements of the façade and gives the building designer key parameters within which to work, before applying these design decisions directly to the conceptual mass model.

FenestraPro Premium enables Users to establish the following key design parameters relating to the performance of the building from the:
  • The maximum allowable Percentage Glazing based the thermal performance;
  • Optimal distribution of the Percentage Glazing to maximize passive solar gain, without overheating the building;
  • Performance specification for alternative glazing types;
  • The optimal shading system to control heat gain at peak times;
  • Review thermal, heat gain and daylighting performance values;
  • Display values and indicate performance in chart format, or on the model.
  • Apply decisions relating to Percentage Glazing directly to the Revit model.

This is a BETA Trial release of FenestraPro for Revit, and is of limited functionality. It does not currently save information outside of the Revit model, nor does it generate reporting, which will be functionality added for commercial release version.

As the software is currently at trial and development stage ahead of a full commercial release it has limited functionality and should not be relied upon for any reason whatsoever.  We do not provide any warranty or representations of any kind in relation to the accuracy or completeness of the outputs, and exclude all liability and responsibility for any loss or damage you or any third party may suffer in reliance upon this application.

A commercial release of FenestraPro Premium Version 1.0 is planned for Spring 2015.

CL3VER Releases CL3VER 3.0

From the CL3VER press release...

Real-time photorealistic lighting, VRay material support and secure project sharing for High Quality real-time 3D presentations

Palo Alto, 11th March 2015 - CL3VER, the cloud based platform for interactive 3D presentations, releases CL3VER 3.0, the new generation of the platform dedicated to engineers, architects, and other design professionals. 3.0 is much improved version of the CL3VER platform that includes WebGL GPU-based real-time lightmap technology, Vray material support and a new scene sharing system that will speed up the production workflow of cross platform interactive 3D presentations.

WebGL GPU-based Real-Time Lightmap

Complementing huge jump in rendering speed resulting in the supporting much larger scenes, CL3VER 3.0 introduces a new proprietary automatic real-time lightmap rendering solution that drastically reduces the rendering time required by traditional visualization techniques from several hours to just minutes.

This solution is hardware agnostic GPU-based Real-time rendering technology, that does not rely on any specific hardware to work. From the most powerful dedicated GPU to a traditional integrated GPU the CL3VER lightmap system is consistent on both Windows and Mac.

This disruptive technology provides instant feedback from changes to lights and global illumination lightmaps by displaying an accurate preview in the editor’s scene view of how lighting will look in the published project. Architects and designers can continue to iterate and refine the look of a presentation while final lightmaps update and bake in the background. This dramatically decreases the amount of time needed to make final adjustments to scenes. The user has total control on the quality of the published scene to optimize for its viewing based on requirements.

"HUGE" Update to Free FormIt iOS and Web

From the Autodesk FormIt website...

The FormIt team has been working incredibly hard on a whole bunch of new features and polish to FormIt. So much so, that we have decided to remove the “beta” label from the web app! The new url for FormIt on the web is: http://formit.autodesk.com/app. These videos highlight what is new in Web and iOS and a more complete feature list is after the break.

Create Group Instances

The biggest update is the ability to create and modify Groups. This not only allows you to create separate, distinct objects that do not auto-join while sketching – but also allows for instance copies that update when edited. This enables an enormous amount of flexibility in design.  Visit our help for more info.

Conceptual BIM: FormIt to Revit Conversion

The FormIt to Revit translation methods and stability have been vastly improved. FormIt Groups translate into Revit Mass families to maintain distinct elements and nested structure. Splines, arcs, cylinders and domes now translate into native Revit geometry without facets. Visit our help for more info.

Editing Tool Polish

There have been a number of improvements to the editing tools
  • The Rotate tool has been completely redesigned to be more usable and precise.
  • Select and Drag multiple faces at the same time.
  • Use Smart selection on web to find faces of the same size, pockets of faces, and pockets of faces of the same size.
  • Keyboard Shortcuts on web are expanded to include creation tools, group tools, and editing tools.
  • There are also a few features only available in the Web app:

FormIt Web Fly-through Mode – click on the jet pack guy!

FormIt Web Content Library – link to a local folder or a folder on A360 to read in a user defined folder structure and then drag and drop from the Content library panel into the FormIt Web scene to add pre-made elements into your design

There's more information available on the Autodesk FormIt website.

Free Revit Properties Extension for Windows Explorer Updated

The free Revit Properties tool in CTC’s BIM Project Suite modifies the Windows Explorer / File Explorer interface to quickly provide access to basic data about Revit files by simply right-clicking on them and selecting the “Revit Properties” choice from the Explorer pop-up menu.

Revit Properties will show you information about the Revit file, including the version of Revit last used to save the file, and also things like worksharing information.

With the latest release, included with BIM Project Suite 5.1.8, you can use Revit Properties to open a Revit file with a specific version of Revit.

Only versions of Revit that are installed and are the same or later versions of Revit that last saved the file will be in the list of choices.

Revit Properties will let you “Create New Local” from a central file in the same manner that Revit does, however it cannot open a project “Detached from central” nor can it allow you to choose which worksets to open, or to open the file with auditing turned on.

There's more information available on the CTC website.

Thanks to CTC's Scott Z. for the update!

Free Solar Analysis for Revit Technology Preview Updated

From Scott Sheppard's It's Alive in the Lab blog...

Solar Analysis for Revit is our free technology preview where you can quickly, easily, and iteratively perform solar analysis on the faces of a mass in Autodesk Revit. You can visualize and quantify the distribution of solar radiation on various areas of a mass by taking into account the shading effects from adjacent objects, such as vegetation and surrounding buildings in an urban setting. Using the technology preview can also help with shading device design (effective strategies in blocking unwanted solar radiation) and aperture placement (allowing wanted solar radiation). Let's all get a tan!

Yesterday [March 5, 2015] Revit API Technical Writer, Elizabeth Shulok, provided me with an update of the technology preview. This update extends the technology preview to May 15, 2015 and, based on an email from Product Line Manager, David Scheer, includes the following:
  • You can run solar analysis on building elements surfaces (standard Revit geometry) by selection.
  • There is a new UI focused around analysis-based workflows with one-click results.
    • Open the tool and click 'Analyze' to get initial results, then refine your settings.
    • Only one type (Custom) is available now, with defaults set to a typical PV surface analysis workflow, with all roofs selected, annual cumulative calculation, medium density grid.
    • What other analysis types are valuable?
  • The preset defaults that affect the analysis results are all definable for each view.
  • There is an automatic selection set to reduce the need for clicking each surface — first prototype is 'All exterior roof surfaces.'
  • Modeless windows are available for analysis settings. These can be placed for reporting screenshots.
  • Analysis settings are always in synch with the active 3D view and the modeless windows. When settings change, out of date results are removed.
  • The update features improvement of workflows so results are more intuitively compared to NREL validation results. The algorithm has been validated, but timesteps using the sun settings still need some refinement.
  • Thanks to your feedback, the developers fixed bugs associated with Sun Settings.

There's more information available on the It's Alive in the Lab blog.
