Enlazo: Parameter Link Propagation

Summary

Enlazo is an add-in for Autodesk Revit designed to automate the transfer of parameter values from parent elements, such as structural columns, beams, walls, or slabs, to nearby child elements in any Revit category with writable instance parameters. Instead of requiring users to manually copy values from one element to another, Enlazo uses spatial proximity detection to identify related elements and apply the appropriate parameter values in a controlled, repeatable workflow.

Purpose and Problem Solved

The add-in addresses a common BIM coordination problem: many Revit elements need parameter values that reflect their relationship to nearby structural or spatial elements, but those relationships are not always explicitly stored in the Revit data model. In typical workflows, BIM coordinators, structural engineers, or MEP coordinators must visually inspect the model, determine which elements belong to the same zone or structural relationship, and then enter values one element at a time. This process is slow, repetitive, and prone to inconsistency, especially on projects with hundreds or thousands of related elements.

Workflow

  1. Select the parent category and the parent parameter to read.
  2. Click Find Parent and select the source element in the model. Enlazo highlights the parent element in orange and displays its current parameter value.
  3. Select the child category and the writable child parameter that should receive the value.
  4. Click Find Children. Enlazo samples points along the parent geometry and detects nearby elements within the configured search radius, highlighting detected children in blue.
  5. Review the detected child elements in the tree view, remove any elements that should not be updated, or add elements manually when needed.
  6. Confirm the value to assign, then click Save Data. Enlazo writes the selected value to all selected child elements in a single Revit transaction.

For a typical parent element, this workflow can be completed in less than a minute, making it significantly faster than manual parameter entry across repeated or connected model elements.

Primary Benefits

Enlazo reduces hours of manual assignment work to a short, review-based operation. It improves consistency by applying the same parent value across all selected child elements in one transaction, lowers the risk of missed or mistyped entries, and provides an auditable record of assignments. This is especially valuable on projects with repeated floor plates, zone-based parameter schemes, structural connection properties, or cross-discipline coordination requirements.

Best-Fit Use Cases

  • Assigning zone parameters from structural columns, beams, walls, or slabs to connected framing, connection, or secondary elements.
  • Propagating fire rating, specification, phase, or classification values from primary structural elements to nearby model components.
  • Coordinating MEP elements with structural zone assignments when element relationships are determined by physical location rather than direct data links.
  • Maintaining consistency across repeated floor plates or large structural models where manual assignment would be time-consuming and inconsistent.

Key Features

  • Proximity detection: Samples points along parent geometry, including columns and curve-based elements, to identify nearby child elements within the detection radius.
  • Cross-category assignment: Supports parent and child elements from different Revit categories, as long as the receiving child parameter is writable.
  • Granularity control: Allows users to apply values to individual subcomponents or restrict assignment to top-level family instances.
  • Manual Select mode: Lets users add elements directly to the child list by selecting them in the model when automated detection needs refinement.
  • Tree-view review: Provides a structured list of detected child elements so users can confirm exactly which elements will be updated before data is written.
  • Single-transaction save: Applies selected values to multiple child elements in one Revit transaction for speed and consistency.
  • Assignment log: Records assignment activity in a local project-based JSON log, creating a traceable audit trail.
  • Audit command: Enables users to browse, filter, review, and select previously updated elements directly in the model.
