Version QR Codes: Drawing Version Control

Overview

Version QR Codes is a Revit add-in from Penguin Tools that connects issued or printed sheets to live digital information through unique QR codes. Its principal use is drawing version control: a person in the office or on site scans the code with a standard phone or tablet camera to reach the latest PDF, a common data environment (CDE) location, a project URL, or a 3D model, and can determine whether the physical drawing is current or superseded. The product is intended to close the information gap between paper deliverables and the project’s digital source of truth. Penguin Tools reports more than 19,000 active codes in use; this is a vendor claim rather than independently verified usage data.

How It Works

  1. Define the identifier. By default, the add-in uses the Revit Sheet Number. Users can combine built-in parameters and custom shared parameters assigned to the Sheets category to form a drawing name or data payload.
  2. Configure a profile. A profile controls appearance, data links, and title-block placement. Profiles can be created for purposes such as client issue or internal review, saved for reuse, and loaded from a central network location to support company standards.
  3. Generate and place codes. The add-in can create one code or batch-generate many unique codes and place them on title blocks. The vendor advertises generation of up to 1,000 codes in one operation.
  4. Publish the deliverable. Codes can be carried into PDF, DWG, or DXF output, or exported as standalone PNG/JPG images for reports, labels, or stickers.
  5. Scan and verify. The recipient scans the code without a proprietary viewer. The linked destination provides access to current information so the recipient can check the drawing’s status before using it.

Key Capabilities

  • Revit-aware data linking: Uses sheet parameters and project URLs rather than requiring codes to be prepared manually in a generic web generator.
  • Batch automation: Produces unique codes at scale and positions them consistently on title blocks, reducing repetitive sheet-by-sheet work.
  • Visual customization: Supports standard, dots, rounded, and modern pixel styles; preset or advanced colors; left-to-right, top-to-bottom, radial, and other gradients; and a centrally embedded PNG company logo. The listing states that logo placement uses error correction to preserve scan reliability.
  • Reusable standards: Named profiles capture configurations for different issue purposes. External profiles can provide centrally managed settings for multi-user deployment.
  • Multiple outputs: Codes can appear in PDF and CAD exports or be delivered as raster images, extending their use beyond native Revit sheets.
  • Mobile accessibility: Standard smartphone and tablet cameras can read the codes, avoiding a dedicated field application or specialized hardware.

Value for BIM and Construction Workflows

The add-in’s strongest use case is reducing the risk of building from an obsolete paper set. A scan gives field staff a quick verification path to the controlled digital source, potentially exposing a newer revision before work proceeds. This can reduce rework, delays, and time spent locating documents. It also gives BIM and document-control teams a consistent method for linking physical sheets to a CDE, latest PDF set, or model while retaining company branding. These benefits depend on sound publishing governance: the QR target, sheet identifiers, revision data, and permissions must remain accurate and available.

Implementation Considerations

  • Define governance first: Decide which destination is authoritative, who updates it, and how long links must remain valid.
  • Standardize identifiers: Establish parameter combinations that stay unique across projects, packages, disciplines, and revisions.
  • Test print and scan quality: Validate minimum size, contrast, logo treatment, gradients, printer output, photocopies, and weathered field copies before deployment.
  • Confirm access: A code is only useful if intended recipients can open the target on their devices. Review CDE authentication, external-user permissions, connectivity, and offline contingencies.
  • Control profiles: Store approved profiles centrally where appropriate, restrict uncontrolled variants, and document the title-block insertion standard.
  • Pilot before scaling: Test a limited sheet set through authoring, export, upload, print, scan, revision, and archive cycles. Confirm how replaced or superseded content is presented.
  • Review IT requirements: Because the application uses a custom installer and creates externally resolved links, deployment, security, privacy, firewall, and data-retention requirements should be reviewed.

Assessment

Version QR Codes is a focused bridge between Revit sheet production and field document verification. Its principal differentiators are native access to sheet parameters, automated title-block placement, large-batch generation, branded styling, reusable profiles, and support for several publishing formats. It is most valuable where printed drawings continue to circulate alongside controlled digital information. It does not replace a CDE, revision procedure, or document-control policy; it provides a fast access and verification layer over those systems. A well-governed deployment could improve QA/QC and reduce superseded-document risk, while a poorly maintained link strategy could create false confidence. The add-in is therefore best evaluated through a controlled pilot using representative projects and field conditions.
