CADS Rebar Extensions for Autodesk® Revit®

From the Autodesk App Store:

Save time by automatically generating reinforcement in Revit using the free unlimited trial of CADS' Extension Tools for a range of standard concrete structures. Select the structural concrete elements to be reinforced, launch the appropriate tool or select the automatic generation tool. Specify the parameters to be used when reinforcing the structure. Supported concrete elements include: beams, columns, continuous footings, parapets, pile caps, concrete piles, retaining walls, slab corners, slab openings, spread footings, wall corners and walls.

The Rebar Extensions were originally developed by Autodesk but due to their close partnership with CADS they have asked us to develop and maintain the extensions. These extensions work with CADS RC3D for Revit which is an Autodesk® Revit® extension designed to enhance the placement, annotation and bar marking of reinforcing steel in all kinds of RC structures. CADS RC3D takes the 3D modelling functionality of Revit to the next level allowing rebar to be divided up into particle groups (bar ranges), bar marks to be created and managed, detailed reinforcement (shop) drawings to be created with a single click! Bar bending schedules are automatically created and material lists exported to external production software file formats such as BVBs, aSa, Soulé and Excel.

CADS Markup also comes with CADS RC3D and allows structural engineers to annotate a Revit model with reinforcement information to convey the design intent to reinforcement detailers effectively avoiding the process of manually marking reinforcement regions on printed general arrangement drawings.

Structural Design Dynamo Package v1.0.5

From the Revit blog:

Structural Design package version 1.0.5

By Tomasz Fudala
February 7, 2019

Three months ago, I published the Structural Design Dynamo package, which supports various structural workflows in Dynamo and Revit. I shared some example scripts [here and here] based on the package. I also taught a class at AU on this subject.

Since that time, many of you have reached out to me. First, I would like to thank you all for your positive and inspiring feedback!

Many of you have started to use this package on your everyday projects, but some of our international friends found the Geometry.GetWindowDoorOpeningCharacteristics node a bit limited.

In the previous version of the package, some of the parameter names were hard-coded (names of the dimensions of opening type parameters, host thickness).

I have good news to share – version 1.0.5 of the package comes with an updated node.

Learn the Power of Dynamo for Automated Reinforcement Detailing – Part 2

By Tomasz Fudala
December 13, 2018

In this blog post, I’ll continue the subject I started a few weeks ago. In Part 1 I covered how structural engineers and detailers can automate reinforcement designs with Dynamo in the example of straight rebars around window and door openings. Let’s extend the functionality of the script by adding additional rebars for wall openings.

Learn the Power of Dynamo for Automated Reinforcement Detailing – Part 1

By Tomasz Fudala
November 27, 2018

In this blog post I would like to demonstrate how to automate reinforcement designs with the Dynamo graphical programming interface using the example of standard rebar designs for window and door openings.

Revit 2019.1 comes with Dynamo 1.3.3 preinstalled, however the workflows covered in this blog post are compatible with Dynamo 2.0. When you try to run scripts presented in this post you should make sure you are using Dynamo 2.0, which you can download and install from dynamobim.org/download.

Dynamo 2.0 can be installed side-by-side with an existing 1.x version allowing you to have control over which major version you use for your project. In Dynamo for Revit, you will be prompted to choose which version you wish to run on first launch of Dynamo. This setting is cached per-session of Revit. A restart of Revit will enable you to change to a different version of Dynamo.

Use Case: Modelling Rebar in Revit with Dynamo

From the Autodesk BIM and Beam blog:

Rebar Modelling in Revit with Dynamo Use Case by ABT

Tomasz Fudala
October 28, 2015

In this post I want to tell you more about how one of our customers, ABT bv, used Revit and Dynamo to automate the reinforced concrete detailing of wind turbine foundations.

ABT is a multi-disciplinary consultancy firm, focused on the structural engineering, civil engineering, architectural engineering, building physics and installation engineering knowledge domains, with offices in Netherlands, Belgium and Germany.

In 2014 they moved to BIM-based 3D rebar in Autodesk Revit for concrete reinforced design and fabrication for their wind turbine foundation projects, because they do a lot of these projects worldwide. Around the same time they first started to use Autodesk Dynamo. They are challenged to make these wind turbine projects as “flexible” as possible. Revit and Dynamo are perfect for achieving this as these projects are relatively small, the main focus can be set on reinforcement and they are highly parametric.
