Product Review: Hypar

From the BIM Chapters blog:

By Dan Stine
Wednesday, August 8, 2018

I had a recent web-based meeting with Anthony Hauck, and Ian Keough, both of the newly formed Hypar. Before I talk about Hypar, I want to make sure you know who these two guys are...

Anthony Hauck was with Autodesk for 10 years and at one point was head of all Revit product line development and in his most recent role headed the development of generative design among other things. I've crossed paths with him many times over the years, at AU and RTC/BILT. As well as most recently when LHB hired him, post-Autodesk, to give a web-based pretension on generative design. He is a great and passionate guy!

Ian Keough is, well, the father of Dynamo. For the past 5.5 years he was also with Autodesk. He was also involved in some interesting BIM360 Field development. Here is a 2014 interview on the origin's of Dynamo you may find interesting: Meet Ian Keough, Dynamo’s Papa. I still find it interesting how things have evolved from what the Revit founders thought regarding user programming in Revit, as I previously wrote about here: Revit User Programming - Not Originally in the Cards. Clearly Ian had a different vision, and it has been widely embraced!

Much more could be said about these two I am sure... but suffice it to say this is truly a dynamic-duo from which great things will emerge! See what I did there:)

So what is Hypar?

    • Focusing rendering power in small areas that need more rendering to finish the process fast.
    • Roughness Map – It allows the user to set an image based distribution of roughness for metal and plastic materials instead of a single value applied to whole material.
    • Alpha Channel Emitter – Alpha areas of textures will turn transparent if used on an emitter..

SPOT – An Online Database for Easily Adding Acurate Sustainability Product Data to Revit Models (Updated)

Updated on January, 4 2017 to add the following:

Editor's Note: The Revit add-in mentioned in the article is currently under development and in private Beta testing. Launch is expected in April.

From the HingePoint blog:

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) wants to get credible sustainability data into Revit models more easily.

To do so, UL recently launched a web-based product, sustainability-information tool that will help users select credible green products and place that information into their Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflow.

“Most people know UL for our fire, mechanical, safety testing; we’ve been doing that for 120 years,” said UL public affairs director Mark Rossolo at Autodesk University. “What most people also don’t know though that we are the largest certifier of sustainable products for use in the buildings.”

The web app–called SPOT–features more than 40,000 products. SPOT’s database will help architects and designers identify products by sustainable attributes, MasterFormat product codes and building rating system credits such as LEED v4 and the WELL Building Standard™.
