Automatic Wall Creation with the Revit API

From The Building Coder blog:

Automatic Wall Creation

By Jeremy Tammik
November 30, 2017

I highlight yet another thread from the Revit API discussion forum, on mathematical translations for automatic wall creation, with an exceedingly elegant solution by Alexander @aignatovich Ignatovich.

Alexander's macro illustrates a number of important concepts and implements the following functionality very succinctly indeed:
  • Retrieve all the cube family instances
  • Retrieve their height parameter value
  • Retrieve their solids making use of the .NET yield operator
  • Extract their horizontal outline contours using an ExtrusionAnalyzer
  • Create walls along each contour curve segment
  • Place a door family instance at the midpoint of each wall
  • His code is well worth reading in detail!

An absolute must, actually!

Cube family instances before running command

Walls and doors added along cube horizontal
contours after running command

AutoSleeveDimension (ASD)

From the Autodesk App Store:

ASD finds all available sleeves (Specialty Equipment) and draws dimensions to the nearest horizontal and vertical gridline for current view (floor). The user need to provide two inputs - 'Sleeve Type' and 'Dimension Type' - in order to draw desired dimensions. It also allows the user to view dimension details, adding the suffix to dimensions with a click.

Modelling Variations from Sound Waves with Dynamo

From the Whole Construction Solutions LLC website:

Dynamo Workflow with Sound Waves

November 27, 2017

Here's an interesting workflow that allows you to take sound waves and modify elements in Revit.

Here's what "Midnight Rider, Allman Brothers" looks like when I used it to modify a fence.

It's a actually a pretty easy process!

Step one: Select elements in Revit

Step two:  Get your data from Excel and clean up the list for use in Dynamo

Linking Revit Projects from BIM 360 with Autodesk Desktop Connector

From the CADD Microsystems Blog:

NEW AUTODESK DESKTOP CONNECTOR HEADS-UP ABOUT LINKS

By Jason Kunkel
Nov 28, 2017

We absolutely LOVE Collaboration for Revit, but definitely recognize that one of its issues is the inability to link in other files hosted in your BIM 360 Team project space. That’s why we’re thrilled to hear about the new Autodesk Desktop Connector. Information is still coming out, so we expect this software to evolve over the next few months. During some testing, we wanted to make you aware of a small oddity that might cause some confusion.

The Autodesk Desktop Connector essentially gives you a drive connection to your BIM 360 or Fusion 360 Teams right on your desktop. Like any other cloud drive application, this lets you drag and drop, rename, copy, etc. files in your cloud storage straight from Windows (or macOS).

The HUGE addition, however, is that with the new technology you can (in Revit 2018 only) link files that normally had to be linked from desktop or local network drives. This is a game changer for how useful using a BIM 360 Team project can be. Now anyone in that project can link in a file like a DWG, and anyone accessing a C4R model from the project will see those links.

nodesolver for Product Line Placer – Eliminate Custom Fitting Warnings from Autorouting

From the MEP Content website:

New App functionality - nodesolver to get rid of custom fittings in Revit

21 November 2017

Do you recognize this situation? You are designing in Revit and all of a sudden, you get this warning: Custom fitting was created.

You dismiss the warning and continue designing when your colleague comes in the office and asks you what you want in your coffee. You forget about the warning, only to find out a couple of days later that you are missing some things on your bill of materials...

We have good news! Custom fittings in Revit can be a thing of the past when you use our apps in combination with a new functionality, the nodesolver.

The Week that was in Revit Add-ons for November 20-26, 2017

The week of November 20, 2017 was a busy one here on Revit Add-ons with 37 posts published.

New

Revit

From the Autodesk App Store, we posted about IDEA StatiCa Connection, for analyzing, designing and checking steel connections and joints, Polygon Select, for selecting elements using irregular polygon shapes, and SheetEz, for more easily and powerfully managing sheets.

From around the Internet, we posted about the free BIMcollab ZOOM, for IFC model viewing and validation.

BIM 360

From the App Store, we posted about the free Voice 360, for controlling the Forge Viewer with voice commands.

Roundup – For November 20-26, 2017, New and Updated Revit Add-ins on the Autodesk App Store

The week of November 20, 2017 was a moderately busy one on the Autodesk App Store. One new Revit add-in was published, along with five being updated. Two Autodesk Advance Steel add-ins were updated. One new BIM 360 add-in was published. And one Navisworks add-in was updated.

Unfortunately, there were as many possible false updates last week as there were legitimate changes.

For new add-ins,  Polygon Select is for selecting elements in Revit using polygon shapes, and Voice 360 is for executing Forge viewer commands using voice recognition.

Retrieving Curtain Wall Panel Faces with the Revit API

From The Building Coder blog:

Curtain Wall Panel Geometry with Basic Wall Panel

By Jeremy Tammik
October 25, 2017

A quick geometrical question on retrieving geometry from a basic wall being used as a panel in a curtain wall:

Question: I am struggling to retrieve the geometry data from a curtain wall that contains a Basic wall in one of the curtain wall panels.

My example curtain wall has two panels. With one of the panels, a basic wall type is associated. I need to get the geometry data (i.e., the faces) for the entire curtain wall. When I reach the second panel in my code, the SymbolGeometry contains zero objects, so my code cannot retrieve any geometry for it. As a result, it is not able to handle the basic wall to retrieve its geometry face data.

Free Robot-AdvanceSteel Link (Updated)

From the Autodesk App Store:

With Robot-AdvanceSteel Link, you can export a Robot structural model using the smlx format. You can then import the smlx file in Autodesk® Advance Steel in order to detail steel connections and automatically generate fabrication documents. From Robot, you can export values of internal forces with the model to the smlx file. After importing the file to Advance Steel, you can use these values to perform code checking of connections.

Conversely, you can export a model from Advance Steel in order to perform structural analysis and code checking in Robot.

You can also track changes in the same model in both applications using the synchronization feature.

Example

ElumTools v2018.4, 2017.7, & 2016.11

From the ElumTools website:

ElumTools New Features

These features are included in the latest releases of ElumTools 2018, 2017, and 2016.

Isolines and Spatial Maps

ElumTools now has two new tools to help you evaluate the gradient of light across a workplane or surface: Isolines and Spatial Maps. Isolines are contour lines drawn through values of equal illuminance and Spatial Maps are partially transparent shaded color plots showing similar gradients. You can use the two tools independently or together in the ElumTools calculation viewer.
